It’s summer holidays time for my daughter’s school in July’24. So, we have planned to have an exciting road trip around Malaysia with our Nissan Almera car. We also decided to combine our love for travel with a camping adventure. Although we never did camping until now, we decided to explore different sources on getting the necessary gear for the camping journey in this road trip.
Planning
After we decided to have the road trip, I checked with my colleagues and friends who are familiar with different places around Malaysia. On a high level the places were listed down and things to do in those places. Basically, we planned to explore the places that are suitable for camping and informative places suitable for my daughter.
Camping Gear
Since we decided to adventure with camping, planned basic camping gear – camping tent, inflatable mattress, folding chairs, portable gas stove etc. We eagerly waited for the departure day!
The Journey Begins
The day came in July to load fully all the necessary stuff in our car and start our road trip. Before we start, we didn’t have any bookings for the stay as it’s not fix bound trip. Without fixed accommodations, we set off for a 9-night, 10-day adventure.
Day 1: Ipoh
On our first stop at Ipoh, where we explored Buddhist caves, Gunang Lang recreational park, and indulged in local delicacies like Nam Heong Dim Sum and Ipoh white coffee. We couldn’t resist Ipoh’s famous Kaya biscuits from Sin Eng Heong.
Day2 & 3: Cameron Highlands
At Hola campsite, 1500 meters above sea level, we experienced our inaugural camping nights and it’s chilling 15 degrees. Along with camping, also roamed around the strawberry farm and BOH tea estate.
Day 4: Tanjung Malim
Our second camping night took place at Tok Bak campsite, nestled in a durian farm along a river stream.
Day 5: Slim River and Bentong
We visited the hidden gem of Slim River Hot Spring before heading to Bentong. There, we stayed in an Airbnb to explore the National Elephant Conservation Centre in Kuala Gandah and the Farm Fresh dairy farm at UPM.
Day 6: Port Dickson(PD)
In PD, we opted for an Airbnb stay. Our itinerary included visits to the Army Museum and the sky ladder pineapple farm—both educational and enjoyable for all ages. Don’t miss out these two if you are in PD!
Day 7: Malacca
Malacca, a bustling tourist city, welcomed us. We explored Jonker Street, Stadthuys and enjoyed chicken rice balls.
Day 8: Cherating Beach
Heading to the East coast, we camped for one night at Cherating Beach’s Payung Gateway campsite.
Day 9: Kuala Terengganu and Kenyir Lake
Our last night was spent in Kuala Terengganu, where we relished the Terengganu special recipe, “Nasi Dagang.” Before returning to Penang, we visited the hidden gem of Kenyir Lake, home to Malaysia’s largest hydroelectric power plant.
Bottom Line
Our 2,100-kilometer road trip was a perfect blend of adventure, education, and fun. Follow our journey on social media!
